How do I find out who my adviser is? Do I need an adviser?

The Graduate School sends the name and telephone number of an academic adviser to students in a degree program with their letter of admission. Students are required to meet or talk with their adviser before registering for classes. The Graduate School strongly recommends that students meet regularly with their adviser as they play an important role in the graduate student's course of study. Their signature is required on most forms submitted to the graduate school and a student's program of study is not valid until it has been approved by both the adviser and the Graduate School. Students who want to change advisers should check with their department for additional information and instructions.

Non-degree and temporary graduate students are not assigned academic advisers. Students in these categories who need assistance should contact the department in which they will focus their course of study.
